Interview with Mr. Abdullah AlMarzooqi

Time never stays as it is. This is my conclusion after my interview with Mr. Abdullah Al-Marzooqi, who originally was a fisherman and later an employee in Abu Dhabi's municipality.

Mr. Abdullah is an old man in early 70's who agreed to tell me about the differences between our days, and his. According to Mr. Abdullah, our generation’s life-style is very luxurious when compared to the old days. When he was raised there were no ACs and water had either to be dug or collected from rains. There was no room to be lazy or ignorant; if you want to stay alive you had to work for it. Despite the harsh life, people used to support each other more than these days. No one was hungry; everyone nearly on a daily basis used to give "maoon" (food) to their neighbors. He remembers when he was a kid, his mother used to send him often to deliver "raqaq" (a type of Arabian bread) to his cousins, and as they had many chickens they gave him eggs to take back home.

Later on, Mr. Abdullah, mentioned how he had to work as a fisherman in order to support his family. Then he found his place in the municipality, and he described this event was when he realized that people and life in the UAE was getting changed forever; modern streets are established, and old houses are replaced with new ones, and a new generation born. In this era, people kept meeting and family members are contained in the same house.
I went forward with Mr. Abdullah Al-Marzooqi and asked him to tell me more about the early 90's era. He told me about the weekend's vacation, which used to be on Thursday and Friday, unlike now in which Friday and the Saturday are our weekend's vacation.  The primary shopping in the 90's were cooperation stores like Abu Dhabi CO-OP, and Souq Alqadim (old market in Almarkazia). Stores used to close early, and there were no stores that used to open 24/7. The traffic, and people were less as you didn't have to wait too long in hospitals. Everything according to him was done on paper, and no one used computers.
After that, I asked if Mr. Abdullah is still going for fishing trips. He told me yes, he does with his sons and grandsons on some weekends. Admitting they do it as a part of a family trip and for leisure and not for living, it is still the primary activity he is doing at his age. In the past he used to stay for a week at sea, in order to catch fishes, and nowadays the maximum time he spends at sea is 2 days. When he returns home, he tells his grandsons to give some of the fishes to their neighbors, in order to teach them about sharing.

Finally, after I finished my interview with Mr. Abdullah Al-Marzooqi, I realized that time never stays as it is. Mr. Abdullah witnessed 3 periods of changes in the UAE, and experienced a lot of events in only 70 years of his life. We don't know what the future is holding for us, yet I am certain knowing our past is a mandatory for dealing with the future, and overcoming any obstacles that could face us.

A trip to Al Ghazal golf club (reflection essay)

In the leisure and sport course, we had been assigned an interview, and research a club or organization to colleagues. Let's start this out, by saying that during this task we faced a great obstacle, which was that our group is used to work as individuals, and not as a team. So to sort this out, we started first by talking to each other, getting aware of our skills and strengths, and then assigning the tasks among us.
We initially selected Al Forsan club as our course project. However, it's been said: "the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry", and it was exactly what happened with us. Al Forsan didn't reply to us, and when we encountered them, all we got from them was a promise to be contacted soon. Unfortunately as you might guess this didn't go so well. After we couldn’t secure an interview with them, Abdalrahaman suggested to select Alghazal Golf Club instead, and so we did.

We went ahead with our plan B, and while it wasn't our initial choice, the name of this club, brought a great interest to our group members, specifically with all the strangeness surrounding its name; which made us wonder how this club name is correlated to gazelles (Ghazal in Arabic) and golf as a sport.
Moving forward, our main goal of this course project is to benefit our colleagues, and that's why we selected this club. We tried through this project to learn about golf, and be informative as well to others. Yet, in general we didn't want to be biased towards golf, so we were open to everything the club offered.

Before the trip, all of our group members didn't have a clue about golf beside it’s a game where you have to hit a ball inside a hole. Moreover, we were interested to learn if the club offers other sports and facilities beside golf, and what does Alghazal Golf Club offers for our society, and in which way it could benefit us.

At the beginning of this journey, we collected information about this club from the internet. After that, we arranged a meeting with Alghazal golf club manager and the marketing department. In addition, we collected our main information in person though observing the facilities and looking around the club. With this in mind, Mr. Sid, the manager of Al Ghazal club was a great assistance to us. He gave us a lot of interesting information regarding the club.

We found many interesting things during our trip. For example, the site where Alghazal club is located, is actually more than seven thousand years old. At that time, there were people who used to live in the club place. Given this point, the reason behind the name is also associated to the past as there were many gazelles used to live in the club's region. Furthermore, this club is the only golf club in Abu Dhabi that offers "desert golfing".

Regarding the results, we asked when Alghazal golf club was established which was in 1997. However one aspect that surprised us, and specifically as mentioned earlier was that the club place was formed on a seven thousands years old ground. They have a certificate from geologist to confirm this.
Another unexpected result was when we asked them if there are any Emiratis coming to play golf at Al Ghazal Golf Club. They told us, yes and every year the number of locals are increasing and even shows more interest towards this sport.

The information provided is linked to society as Emiratis are showing interest towards golf. Moreover, golf itself is a sport which is related to our course. In addition, Al Ghazal club have as well a football field, and archery. Futhermore, the club offers many leisure facilities like a relaxing environment, and even a restaurant. So over all, this trip was related to our course “LSS 3003".

All in all, there are many skills required to finish our project successfully. Like, we need to be clear when we communicate with the organization to request interview permission. In addition, we should be working as team players and not like individuals. As a group, our weakness is eliminated and, our strengths are getting honed by other members. All of these are key ingredients to make this case study successful.

In my opinion, I think the results of our case study must be shared with ADMC’s students. Most of us didn’t know about golfing and neither had we had an idea regarding Al Ghazal Golf Club. This case study made us aware about this special place, and to learn more about a unique sport that is golf.  The location itself for this club is in a quiet, pollution free zone.
If we had to do this case study again, we would carry an actual camera instead of our cellphones. Besides that, I don’t see how we could improve it even more. The reasons behind this, is that we put all our efforts into this project, and if we did it again we would still be doing it the same.
